It is not a book I plan to write. But I do think it is possible to see the emergence of a left impulse beginning (?) with the crowd in the French revolution, some incidents (such as the regulator and shay's rebellion) in the American Revolution, Haiti...then look at its reemergence in 1848. I don't like the march of the internationals because it fails to capture those moments--such as anarchists in Mexico and Spain that were outside it, as well as other struggles such as that against racism and colonialism. Its not so much that the internationals are outside this history, but that the left impulse precedes them and outlives them. During the heyday of the internationals, they were sometimes part of the left impulse, and sometimes a containment of it. John–I am not exactly sure what I meant by that. What I originally told that Chronicle person was just that I had seen people operating by consensus, outside the purview of the state, in Madagascar and not completely understood it until I got involved with the Direct Action Network, where people were trying to do the same thing, but much more slowly and painfully because they were learning it all from scratch. How he took that to mean I had introduced practices I'd seen in Madagascar is beyond me. I have no idea what that guy was thinking.
